10 Affiliate Marketing Management Tips

Discover The Answer To The 10 Most Common Affiliate Marketing Management Questions

1. Is affiliate marketing right for my business?

Affiliate marketing is one of the most powerful and effective means of gaining new customers, regardless of your product or service. Affiliate marketing exposes your business to new customers and can get you out of your marketing rut. Additionally, when you initiate an affiliate marketing campaign, you're in control. You determine the commission rate you pay and pay only when your affiliates make a sale. It's a no loss operation for you because you only pay when a sale is made.

2. What are the startup costs?

When you start an affiliate program you have the choice of handling the operations yourself or having it managed by an affiliate network. The costs for either choice are reasonable and generally start around a few hundred dollars. Additionally, as a business owner don't forget that many of your costs may be tax deductible. To start an affiliate marketing program in house, costs will include:

Affiliate management software

Affiliate marketing support including a website that answers affiliate questions and a means for them to contact you if any issues arise.

Affiliate marketing materials including banner ads, copy, coupons, and promotional content.

An affiliate marketing contract agreement

Tracking software to track cookies, click throughs, payments, etc...

If you choose to hire an affiliate network to handle your program they generally charge a flat fee or a percentage of what you pay out each month.

3. How much time will it take out of my workday/workweek?

Most experts agree that it will take you about an hour and a half each day to manage your affiliate program. They also recommend you to budget more time in the first few months of your program, approximately two to three hours a day. Even the most efficient affiliate managers spend about 45 minutes a day managing their affiliate program.

Professional affiliate managers generally spend an average of 40-80 hours a month dedicated to managing, tracking and promoting your affiliate program.

4. Should I use an affiliate network?

Do you have an extra 3 hours a day for the next two or three months? Do you have an hour a day to devote to managing your program after the initial three month program is complete? An affiliate network, while it may be a bit more expensive on the outset, can help you focus your time on other profit generating tasks. Additionally, an affiliate network can help expose your affiliate program to a wide variety of experience affiliates, which means more money in your bottom line and more exposure overall.

That being said, there are a tremendous number of effective in-house solutions including some you're likely already familiar with like 1shoppingcart.com and affiliatepro.com. These programs will help you stay 100% in control of your affiliate program and are effective at managing your program.

5. How should I pay affiliates? What type of commission works best?

This is a very important decision because it not only affects your profits, the right commission rate will help you recruit top-notch affiliates. The general rule of thumb is to set your default commission rate at a rate you can afford to pay while leaving room for time limited commission increase offers, promotions, and private offers. For example, if you can afford to pay 50% of your gross profit margin, pay 25% instead and tier it so that after a sales goal is reached they earn 30% or you can bump it up to 50% during the holidays or during typically low sales times.

6. How do I recruit affiliates?

Your customers may be your best affiliates. After all, they already appreciate and enjoy your products or services. A simple link on your website is a good place to start. Here are a few ways to find quality affiliates:

Online forums. These are excellent places to meet and greet and connect with like minded individuals. They're also a good resource for affiliates who are interested in, motivated, and qualified to sell your products and services. Using a forum, you can announce your affiliate program. Be careful to not 'sell' on the forum as most forums look down on this and may kick you off. Additionally, you can include a link to your affiliate site in your signature.

Find websites that link to your competitors and approach them about being an affiliate for you. Likewise, you can find affiliates using your favorite search engine and contact them about joining your program.

One last way is to join an affiliate network or become listed on an affiliate directory. This will ensure that affiliate marketers who are searching for new products and services to promote. However, keep in mind that many beginner marketers also seek products and services to promote via affiliate directories and they may lose interest and motivation before they ever make a sale. This isn't a strong deterrent because they don't get paid unless they make a sale, however it should be noted.

7. What is the best way to communicate with my affiliates?

Email is the general tool of choice, which makes an auto responder a fantastic tool for basic emails like the welcome email, introducing promotions, coupons, sending links and banner ads, and answering Frequently Asked Questions. It is also generally advisable to have an email address, fax number, and telephone number available for when affiliates have questions that are not answered by your frequently asked questions web page or when they simply want to speak with you.

8. How do I motivate affiliates?

Money motivates no doubt about it. That being said, affiliates are also motivated by feeling that they're important to you. This means when they ask for your time, you give it. Additionally, promotions, bonuses, prizes, contests, and commission increases are all tools to motivate and inspire affiliates. Constant communication, like sending a weekly or monthly Ezine, will also help remind your affiliates that you're out there and invested in their success.

9. Do I need to hire an affiliate manager?

The answer to this question really depends on your needs. How large is your company? Do you have the time to manage your program? Do you have the skills to manage your program? An affiliate manager is the person that:

Recruits affiliates

Communicates with affiliates

Develops, tracks, and reports on promotions

Develops programs to enhance affiliate program

Motivates affiliates

Tracks sales and pays affiliates

Monitors your competition

These are all extremely important functions and if you have the time to handle them yourself, excellent! If you do not, then consider hiring an affiliate manager.

10. How do I find/hire an affiliate manager?

Outsourcing an affiliate manager is fairly easy to do. There are hundreds available with a quick online search. You can ask associates, inquire at online forums, or post an advertisement seeking someone to fill the position. Depending on the complexity of your affiliate program, you could consider a well qualified virtual assistant for the job. The skills your affiliate manager will need are:

Organizational skills

Communication skills

Attention to detail

Knowledge of online business, internet marketing, and basic ecommerce operations

Basic html and graphic experience are a plus

Because they're going to be representing you, you'll want to make sure they're personable.

Making Your Ecommerce Site Sell

    By john freech

Your website may be the cornerstone of your business, but if nobody knows its out there then what good is it? I quit counting the number of people I have spoken with over the years who were convinced that simply having a site somehow guaranteed them instant traffic and endless sales. After waiting for something to happen some of these folks eventually saw the light and took steps to rectify their situation, and others unfortunately were rooted in their belief and as far as I know their websites are still sitting out there in cyberspace unvisited and underutilized. My purpose is to educate you how to avoid this trap and at least give your site a fighting chance.

We already know the Web is the most cost-effective way for a small business owner to reach the largest number of potential customers. Internet advertising is becoming big business, but you can benefit from it as well. There are many do-it-yourself techniques advertising techniques for the online entrepreneur who has a fledgling business on a tight budget. Usually, the more effort you put into attracting attention to your business, the more visits you receive. So roll up your sleeves and let's get ready to work.

Build Your Brand

In case you haven't figured it out by now, half the battle with running a successful online business is developing a plan for what you want to do. The next step is to get noticed.

Online marketing and advertising is ideal for a number of reasons. Web users tend to be fixate on their computer screens while they browse, so you have a captive audience. Because most Web surfers sit only a foot or two away from their screens that means your site can easily get a user's undivided attention...that is if your content is compelling enough. Users like to interact with Web pages in a way that they never do with television, so do not be reluctant to encourage interaction by giving them links to click, a few images to view, and the like.

Don't rely on your website alone to spread your name. Make use of the whole Internet. These days you have countless options, such as the following, to get the word out about your online business:

Article marketing: Are you an expert on what your website is about? Why not put that expertise into words in the form of some articles. I have found this tactic to be highly effective in getting the exposure I want. Not sure if you are author material? That's okay because there are any number of freelance writers just waiting to do the writing for you for a lot less than you think. I have had high quality, topically relevant, 500-plus word articles written for less than $25.00 each. What you do with the article once it is written is a topic for another article later.

Blogging: Find a blog or blogs related to you area of interest and become a member. Become involved in the discussions enough without blatantly advertising your site. I use this method and have discovered once I have made a few helpful, relevant posts that I am often offered enhanced memberships that allow me to put links back to my business website. When this happens it is like finding a gold nugget. You can use the links to direct other blog visitors, as well as search engine spiders, to your site to have a look.

Where do you find blogs related to the topic of your site? The easiest way I have found is to use FastBlogFinder. It's a neat tool that quickly locates blogs in your niche.

!! Blogging Tip !! :When you submit a comment on other people's blog, you are usually asked to provide your name, email address, URL and comment text itself. When your comment is posted, your URL is attached to the text you entered in the "Name" field. The key is to use your keyword anchor text as your name. And... be sure to write something useful in the comment section, so it doesn't look like 100% spam. Post a comment only if you have something of value to add to the discussion and not just to get links. Your comment will be pending for approval and blog owners are much more likely to approve your comment if it is relevant. Remember, the only cost of your new backlink is a comment. So, take a few moments to write a meaningful comment. Most webmasters understand that people make their "name" something relevant to their site and they do not begrudge them a link if their comment adds to the content and'or discussion on their site.

Partnerships: Find businesses whose goods and services complement yours and ask for permission to swap links. Call me old fashioned, but I still do this by hand. I simply look for related sites that get spidered by the search engines frequently. This lets me know the site is adding enough fresh content to keep the search engines interested.

As time passes, and your site matures, you will likely start getting link swap requests. Do not delete these out of hand because they appear to be machine generated. First I look to see if they sent their link in HTML code making it easy for me to copy and paste it into my site. If they don't send their link information this way I stop right there and delete their message. I then visit each site that asks for a link swap. I look to see if their site is relevant without directly competing. I look at the page they tell me my link will reside.(If there are more than 30 links on that page I stop right there and delete their request from my Inbox). If it all looks okay then I'll swap links.

Some of you reading this might be saying "How rude! I would never delete someone's link swap request out of hand." That's up to you, but from experience I can tell you that if you chose to be the nice guy and swap links with every site that asks you may see yourself spending half your productive time doing nothing else. Be picky.

Newsletters: You can generate a lot of traffic and hopefully sales by distributing an e-mail newsletter.

PPC advertising: This is not for the faint of heart. I only recommend this if you have deep pockets and want to use PPC initially to get your site some exposure. Google AdWords is where most people go to buy traffic. I could write a book about how to do PPC the smart way, but for now I suggest you learn everything you can about it by going Google's AdWords Center and taking advantage of their free lessons.

There you have my short list of ways to get your e-commerce site out there and making it sell. Get your marketing and advertising plan together before you venture forth. Take your time; experiment a bit; drop what isn't working and keep what does; above all have fun.

7 Top Tips to Help Business Women Use Their Internet Shopping Cart With Success

Understanding how to use a shopping cart will be an important move for any woman doing business on the Internet. Shopping carts are a vital component of your successful business operations. Here are 7 tips on how to better utilize your shopping cart software.

1. A shopping cart is a software program that Internet business professionals use to track and deliver product and service sells on the Internet.

2. You will be able to find many varieties of shopping cart software. Be sure to choose a reputable  cart vendor with a good help desk. Get one that has been in service for a while in order to be sure you don't have to move to a new service soon after setting up.

3. Your  cart software will track items your customer select for purchase. It will automatically calculate the sales total including any appropriate tax or shipping fees. Additionally, your software will collect payment information.

4. Shopping cart software can be incorporated into the website storefront and managed by the woman Internet marketer manually or you can put it into a separate program that is operated through contract by an independent party. This independent party provides maintenance and hosting for the software.

5. When your customers make a purchase, this is called a conversion in Internet commerce language. High conversion rates are as important as page impressions, so women Internet marketers will want to design websites that are easy to use and often offer customers incentives for completing the purchase.

6. A way to encourage sells is to offer multiple payment options to your customers. You also want to make the process easy. Accepting payments through PayPal (an online funds transfer service), by credit cards, and through echecks which take funds directly from the customer's checking account are options to consider for payment acceptance.

7. Use good customer service management techniques to continue to build loyalty in your new customers. This business function is referred to as customer relations management (CRM) and includes all practices and procedures used by the business woman to ensure a positive experience for customers. Consider using live support, a toll-free number, or sending confirmation and thank-you emails following a purchase.

Understanding how to use a shopping cart to its full effectiveness will be one of the smart business woman's best tools in successful ecommerce.

Choosing the Best Affiliate Programs for Your Niche

When choosing an affiliate program to complement your website and niche market, you will need to do some research. Since you make a profit only if a sale is made from a visitor's trip to your site, finding good programs to join is essential. If you already have a published website, you can add affiliate programs to it, or you can simply build a niche site to promote a specific product or service. As long as it brings in more cash than it takes to build or run it, you will be successful.

There are so many affiliate programs available these days, a marketer can find a complementary partner in virtually any niche imaginable. Although it may seem tempting to join programs with the highest commissions, if they aren't complementary to your niche, or if the product or service isn't the best available, what good are they if your website visitors ignore them or simply choose not to buy?

So what should you look for when selecting an affiliate marketing partner? Below, are a few tips and suggestions to aid you in selecting the perfect affiliate program for your niche:

1. Even though the product or service looks good, do not join a program that pays less than 25% commission to their affiliates. There are however, many programs available with excellent payment structures and high percentages of pay in your chosen topic.

2. Once you've joined an affiliate program, you will need to track your results, so look for companies that provide statistic information to their affiliates. The most important stats that to track are the number of click throughs, and sales and earnings. If a program is not producing income after a time, you can then determine whether or not to continue with the program, or perhaps changing your marketing efforts and methods.

3. Good affiliate programs will always offer a wide variety of tools for their affiliates to use on their web sites and other marketing materials. Look for companies that provide graphics including banners and storefront pages, text links. With the increased popularity and marketing success of article marketing, reputable companies with affiliate programs also include niche topic articles as marketing tools for their affiliates.

4. Always read the affiliate agreement completely, and make sure to find out how frequently affiliates are paid and be sure that the payment schedule meets your own expectations. Some programs will pay monthly, while others will pay quarterly; while others pay only after your commissions have reached a certain amount. For example, Google AdSense checks are mailed at the end of any month where your commission has reached at least $100 the month before.

5. Supportive affiliate programs will be available to answer your questions in a quick and timely manner. If this type of support is not available, then you may want to reconsider joining their program.

Starting an affiliate marketing online business is a great way to earn passive income and also get your feet wet in ecommerce in general. With time and consistency, you can begin to make money, however, if you are just starting out, you should always use common sense and not join every affiliate program that looks good. Affiliate marketing is an interesting and creative way to either supplement your current income or to create a viable online business that can bring you financial independence.

Home-Based Online Business - How to Start an Online Retail Business and Generate Income From Home

  by john freech

This is certainly something that everybody would like to have--an online retail business that lets you work and earn money from your own home. An arrangement like this is not only possible but it is in fact very easy to do because of the internet. There are ecommerce companies that can help you source out your products and then show you how to sell them fast and profitably.

The first thing you have to do is decide what product you will sell. Don't even think of starting up a business when you have no idea what you are going to sell. You will have to conduct some kind of market study to determine if there is a demand for your product. However, it is always a good idea to sell something that you are interested in or are passionate about because this will have a positive impact on your marketing strategies.

You will also need to register your business with the proper government agency and get a tax identification number. Choose a business name that says something about the kind of products you will sell or the kind of business you are engaged in.

You will have to find a reliable supplier. This step is crucial because you must be able to obtain quality products as cheaply as possible otherwise you will not be able to make a good profit. It is not advisable to simply search online for suppliers because you are likely to become a victim of fake suppliers. Instead, use a reliable wholesale directory like SaleHoo to look for reputable wholesale suppliers. SaleHoo can provide you with a database of quality products and authentic suppliers who can give you the lowest possible prices.

You can sell your products at an auction site like eBay or you can have your own selling site. To get your own selling site, you will have to purchase a domain name. The advantage of using an auction site like eBay is that it has a high traffic volume. Because it is well-known, people automatically visit eBay to make a purchase or find bargains. With your own selling site, you must find ways to steer traffic to your site by using ads or creating links from other sites.

Starting an online retail business is easy enough, but you must know that there are tools and strategies to help you make your home based business profitable. Aside from a wholesale directory, SaleHoo also offers other features to make your online business a huge success, such as market research, marketing strategies, selling tips and private forums where you can learn from the experiences of veteran eBay powersellers. You can use SaleHoo to help you start up your home-based online business and let it take your venture to the next level.

How to Use Web and Internet Video to Market and Communicate

 by john freech

IBM Uses "Do It Yourself" Video to Communicate and Market

"No more long, cumbersome marketing documents - no more boring presentations. Video is how companies and business should communicate," says Mark Leaser, Worldwide Offerings Manager, IBM Software Services for Lotus. "You can do it yourself and save thousands of dollars.

IBM Software Services for Lotus is using video in a wide variety of ways - for internal education and communications as well as for external marketing and customer relations.

Internally, Mr. Leaser and his department are using video for sales training, communication where they want to propose a particular course of action, and to provide training of their technical solution architects and solution specialists. They also are doing internal case studies - talking head interviews and lots of screen capture using their own LotusLive web conference solution and mixing it with live video.

IBM is also using video externally to promote and market their assets and solutions worldwide. The video messages are designed to help customers select, purchase and use the appropriate business solutions.

To speed up the production process, and to ensure a consistent look and feel, Mr. Leaser has developed an effective standardized format to deliver these external messages. These external communication videos usually start with a short teaser - essentially a one to two minute video introduction to a business solution then followed by an action step that is designed to steer viewers to specific online IBM landing pages with much more detail.

Combining the best practices from successful eCommerce and eTailing sites, these landing pages use even more video to further educate and market products and services. A typical video landing page will include links to additional content including additional video and product information. The landing page can also include "infomercial" type videos, as well as videos on how the products work and where to go for more info.

IBM uses video as a means of attracting interest in something that they are doing. The video segments have to be more than a commercial - they have to offer content with value, information of how their solutions will help their customers' business, and tips for using particular solutions.

IBM Saves Money by Producing In House

Currently IBM uses outside production services as well as internal teams to create their videos. The customer case studies and/or reference videos are usually produced by an external company but increasingly, a larger percentage of the videos are being produced internally. Many of the videos are shot at tradeshows and events where IBM's various technical and product experts are in attendance. Rather than hiring an outsider who charges $10K to $15K to produce a video, IBM found that they can do it ourselves, single camera, for a small fraction of the price, and it is just as effective. Over a year, they save hundreds of thousands of dollars."

Some case study videos are shot multi-camera but 90% of all productions are single camera. Most of the videos are captured using standard HD prosumer camcorders (recording onto 16 gigabyte SD cards) with flat lighting from a single large lightbox. For capturing audio, Mark uses professional Sony lavaliere microphones and Audio Technica shotgun microphones. Mark says, "Simple works. One of the most important technical details is to make sure we have clean audio."

To improve the efficiency of the video editing and production process, the video is captured in a native Quicktime format and then inputted into Mac computers running Final Cut Studio. Mark has settled on h.264 and DVKitchen for compression and distribution over the company's intranet as well as over the Internet. Mark usually compresses at the standard Apple TV settings (h.264 at 1280x720 with a 4800 kbps data rate) but DV Kitchen makes it simple to provide a variety of compression templates for various viewing and distribution options.

In many ways, their video production process is just like producing a document using Microsoft word. They use standardized formats and templates, and standardized technical specifications that allow a "producer" to easily cut and assemble a video without having to know a lot of technical details.

Once the video is done, the IBM team can share it in a variety of ways. For internal videos, they often use their own internal media servers or YouTube where the videos can be viewed using the standard YouTube video player.

However, for their external marketing videos, they were not satisfied with embedding YouTube in their public facing pages because there was too much clutter and not enough brand control. To give them more control and present a more professional look, they use outside video hosting companies and video platforms that can be customized.

Authoring video in house works for IBM because their current generation of IT decision makers understand the video language and often don't have the patience to wade through a white paper or technical presentation. To properly reach them, information needs to be presented in a lively, colorful and high-energy mode that can only be conveyed via video.

SIDEBAR

Three reasons your business should use video to communicate

1. Use video - it works. The impact is phenomenal. Following the lead of the direct marketing industry which claims a 4x improvement in response in video versus text, Mark says that short videos with links is the most effective way for establishing powerful outward bound communications and building brand equity. Your audience expects video and you need to give it to them. An effective business presents information in a manner that is most receptive by their target audience.

2. Learn how to do it yourself. Modern video technology and solutions are easy to learn and very affordable. In many ways similar to cut and paste word processing, DIY video production has become the baseline for business communications and marketing. It is similar to the past evolution to word processing from executives relying on secretaries. The stratified and inefficient business architecture of the "Mad Men" TV show is long gone. Similarly, a new business communication paradigm is occurring now with video. Word processing is being supplanted by video. Long documents and boring powerpoint presentations are being replaced by video. Because DIY video is so efficient as a communications tool, it should be an integral part of your business.

3. Video is easier than people think. It is no longer some mystical technology. Yes, 20 years ago, video was complicated, expensive and required an advanced degree. However, with the advent of simple to use video nonlinear "cut and paste" editing programs and affordable high definition digital camcorders, high quality production is now attainable by almost anyone. You can hire someone out of high school who has all the skills. Remember - for business, simple works best. It is all about communicating ideas and information, not fancy effects or 3D explosions.

For some video, IBM has been using the Vzaar video platform because of the power and features of their video player, as well as its overall simplicity, ease of use and the cost effectiveness. Leaser says that "I am a very busy guy with worldwide management and communication responsibilities - I don't have time to fiddle with video compression settings and options. Vzaar makes my job easier."

"vzaar is designed for serious business video hosting unlike other free services like Youtube, Metacafe and Vimeo," says Stephen McCluskey, CEO of vzaar. "Our explosive growth demonstrates the power of video and its attractiveness to business. Any business not using video to communicate and sell is living (and dying) in the stone age."

How to Start and Build Your Own Online Store With No Inventory

   by john freech

1. First think of what type of products you would like to sell online. You can sell any product of your choice; i.e. clothes, electronics, cell phones, online bookstore, jewelry, baby items, sports memorabilia, furniture, art, handmade items, etc. Think about what products or hobbies you may have an interest in. Do your research to see what products are hot in today's market. Check eBay to see what the top selling products are, or how many bids are placed on products of your interest.

2. Come up with a name for your online store that would be appropriate for the items that you are selling. Example: you have an online Health & Fitness bookstore and you want to name your site fitinesslinks.com

How to Select the Right Size For Your Kids Shoes

       by john freech

Kids outgrow shoes very fast. It seems as if they require new shoes each and every month but it is quite difficult to ensure that they get the right size of shoe every time. Kids generally do not bother about wearing fashionable shoes; they will only react if the shoes size is inappropriate. However, you can put off with the shoe drama by learning how to size the kids' shoes.

Here are some easy steps for you that will help your child find the right shoe size.

Step 1

First measure the feet of your child to find out the right size of the shoes. There are many ways to do this. You can use the slide tool that is available at the kids' shoes stores. Just ask the sales associate to help you out with this. Finding out an online measuring tool is also not a bad idea. Most of the popular shoe brands have important sizing tips on their sites, including the sizing tools and charts. Taking the measurement is just the starting point. There are even other factors, which go into the right fit other than the length like the height and width of the feet.

Step 2

Ask you child to try out different types of shoes matching his/her taste. Some of the shoes will be easier to get on than the others. That is in fact quite obvious. If the shoe is quite difficult to get on, you can be definite about the fact that it is not the right one for your kid.

Step 3

Don't go for kids' shoes that have stiff or rigid cuffs because stiff cuffs might hurt your child. Sometimes stiff cuffs may also cause blisters.

Step 4

Squeeze your little one's toes to find out whether the shoe fits properly or not. Make your child wear the shoe and let him/her stand. Then use your thumb for finding out the big toe. There must be a wiggle room between the toe and the front part of your shoe. This is essential for the comfort of your child. It also leads to proper growth of the feet. However, too much space might cause your little one to trip up and fall.

Step 5

Ask your little one to take some careful steps after wearing the kids' shoes. If the heel slips from the heel cup very easily, it's for sure that the shoe size is not right. Then check out another shoe that fits your child's feet.

Step 6

Ensure that your child will wear those pair of shoes after coming out from the store. Kids generally say one thing while buying the shoe and something different after buying them or coming back home.

However, there are many online stores offering kids' shoes from popular brands. Extensive range of styles and sizes of shoes are available at these Ecommerce websites at wide range of prices. The price tags are sure to suit all pockets. So, just choose the brand, style and size of shoe that will fit your kid and order for the one by sitting at the comfort of your home.
