E-Commerce Success and Failures

    By John freech

A few short years ago many large companies started to flock to Facebook to cash in of what is known as F-Commerce. With this marketing model companies can use face book to generate more customer, by using Facebook to assist in the buy and selling of products and services. Is this the new internet gold rush or is it a bust? This method may be debated but, it remains one of the hottest digital commence trends. Some companies are rocking Facebook, while for others the F in F-commerce stands for fail.

Companies such as Game Stop, JC Penney, Nordstrom and the Gap have all opened Facebook store fronts and quickly closed shop. Not even lasting a full year. So, what happened? The problem was that even though everyone is hanging out on Facebook very few people are buying. Without a significant amount of revenue coming in from Facebook the companies quickly shut down. The companies ultimately decided it made more sense for them to put that energy into their own online storefronts. Offering Facebook credits and special coupons was simply not enough to get people to buy while surfing the social web.

However there are success stories to come out of the Facebook E-commerce experience. Zynga games has done very well. With the help of Facebook they have built a huge user base. With customers being able to buy game credits directly from Facebook. Hey, who hasn't gotten addicted to games like Farmville? Having the options to add items to the games right from your Facebook account is very convenient.

Another industry that has fared well with social commerce is event ticketing. Companies Ticketmaster and Eventbrite. With so many members sharing and liking events, both companies saw a positive impact on ticket sales. Facebook's like button has become their top reference for new business. Perhaps like radio, it is a good reminder medium.

Although selling on face book has not gone as well as planned, this model is still in its infancy and won't be giving up without a fight. There is still so much to figure out and amazing potential to be discovered. Some people in the business world feel that in five years time Facebook could be giving Amazon a run for their money. Like any form of sales and advertising what works for some, may not work for others. Seems the only way to know is to try it.
